Farm to Fork Supper Club at Oliver Farms

Farm to Fork Supper Club at Oliver Farms

Oliver Farms in Napanee has evolved from a promising concept into a fully realized culinary destination, where the connection between land and table isn’t just a philosophy; it’s visible in every detail of the experience. Two years ago, I was among the first guests to experience what was then just the beginning of something special. The transformation since that initial visit is amazing.

As I walked up the path to the welcome area on my recent visit, I knew I was about to experience a truly special farm-to-table celebration.

The evening began with warm greetings under the pergola overlooking the farm and fields. The delightful amuse-bouche paired perfectly with sparkling wine from nearby Rosehall Run Vineyards. As we sipped our bubbly, conversations flowed easily among guests—some returning devotees like myself, others wide-eyed first-timers about to discover their new favourite dining experience. This thoughtful beginning set the tone for what would be an unforgettable night.

Oliver Farms has deep roots in the region, dating back to 1792. The property sits on 90 acres and even features a remarkable 150-year-old apple tree that still stands as a testament to its rich agricultural land. The current iteration began as a passion project in 2021, with renovations transforming the historic farm into a culinary destination. What started as intimate gatherings has grown into one of the region’s most sought-after farm-to-table experiences, while still maintaining that personal touch that makes it feel like a dinner party among friends.

After our welcome reception, we were guided to the covered dining area; a cozy space with a perfect mix of rustic charm and elegance. We took our seats at the harvest tables set family-style under vaulted ceilings and twinkling lights. Looking around at the beautiful setting and scanning the menu, I could feel my excitement building for the culinary adventure ahead.

Chef Steven Cuneo’s menu showcased the best seasonal bounty from the farm and surrounding region. Our six-course meal featured exceptional dishes that celebrated local ingredients with creative twists. The scallop crudo was incredibly fresh, complemented by green shiso, wasabi radish, and crispy smoked duck crisps that added layers of flavour and texture. The squash blossoms were stuffed with local cheese and herbs, then lightly battered and fried to a perfect crunch. The standout dish for me was the braised lamb shanks, so tender they fell off the bone, served on a beautiful summer squash puree. The dishes showcased how simple farm ingredients can become something truly special with masterful culinary technique.

Each course came with wine pairings selected by Sommelier Jay Whiteley. He balanced local Ontario wines with some European favourites, explaining each choice in a way that made them easy to understand and appreciate. My personal favourite pairing was the duck agnolotti with Keint-He Rosé, where the wine’s brightness perfectly complemented the richness of the duck. Jay’s friendly explanations of the wines, where they came from, and how they paired with the dishes added an insightful educational element to our meal.

As the sun set, we migrated to the fire pit area, where we watched the last colours of sunset fade while enjoying digestifs and conversation. Around the fire, everyone excitedly recounted their favourite dishes and moments from the evening. I was amazed by how many guests, like myself, were already making plans to return for future events. The way the evening moved naturally from drinks to dinner to gathering by the fire gave the whole experience a relaxed but thoughtful flow.

Looking back on my first visit two years ago, I’m struck by how the essence of what made it special remains intact, even as the experience has become more refined. The commitment to showcasing local ingredients, creating community around the table, and honouring the natural beauty of the region continues to be the foundation of what makes Oliver Farms so magical.

For those who haven’t yet experienced this culinary treasure, upcoming Supper Clubs in September and November offer perfect opportunities to discover it for yourself. Additionally, they’ll be hosting two special events this fall: The Fire Feast and Les Grands Brunch. Based on how quickly past events have sold out, I’d recommend securing tickets as soon as possible.

My evening at Oliver Farms reinforced what I’ve known since that first visit: this is dining as it should be, connected to place, created with passion, and shared in community. It’s an experience that leaves you already planning your return before you’ve even departed. In a world of rushed meals and disconnected eating, Oliver Farms offers something increasingly precious: an opportunity to slow down, connect, and truly savour both the food and the moment.

As I reluctantly made my way back to my car that evening, the warm glow of the experience lingered. Two years after my first visit, Oliver Farms has matured to its full potential while maintaining its authentic charm. I can’t wait to return and witness how this special place continues to evolve, all while staying true to its roots—quite literally—in the fertile soil of the Bay of Quinte region.
