To say summer 2020 is different from other summers would be an understatement. With international trips being cancelled and businesses operating under these “new normal” conditions, you might be wondering what you can do this summer. Thankfully, Belleville’s Downtown District is just as lively as ever with plenty of Al Fresco activities. Here are five things you can safely do this summer in beautiful Downtown Belleville!
Hey friends! Please continue practicing good hand hygiene and physical distancing while hanging out downtown. See Hastings-Prince Edward Public Health for up-to-date news on COVID-19 guidelines.
To me, patio season is what defines summer, and the Downtown District has a wide variety of restaurants going Al Fresco! Enjoy delicious meals, cocktails and desserts while basking in the beautiful summer weather. All restaurants are taking strict precautions to ensure the safety of their guests while still maintaining the level of service you’re used to. Contact your favourite Downtown Belleville restaurant to find out what their hours and policies are!
Prismatica is a wonderful visual experience. Dozens of plexiglass prisms coated with a special paint act as giant kaleidoscopes. Spin the prisms to see the full spectrum of colours dance before your eyes! They dazzle in the sunlight, but are enhanced by internal lighting when the sun goes down. Prismatica has been to France, England and Chicago, and is only in Belleville until August 16, so be sure to check it out before they’re gone! Hand sanitizer is placed on light poles throughout Front St and visitors are encouraged to use it before and after interacting with Prismatica.
#3 Weekly Events
Every week you’ll find even more excitement on Twilight Thursdays, Music in the Air Fridays, and Breakfast Club Saturdays. On Thursdays, downtown businesses are open longer so you can shop, eat and drink later. Every Friday, you can enjoy live music while you have an ice cream or a meal on one of the patios. Stroll by Sans Souci, Gourmet Diem or Capers to find out who’s playing! And every Saturday Crepe Escape, Quinte Corner Cafe, Gourmet Diem, L’Auberge de France, Sans Souci, The Brake Room, Steak Machine and 116 Bistro open early to serve breakfast.
#4 Belleville’s Farmer’s Market
A staple in the community, the Belleville Farmer’s Market is back again this season! Hosted in Market Square, you’ll find a wide variety of vendors open from 9 am to 5 pm every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, rain or shine. Find locally-grown produce and homemade treats all in one spot! If you’re visiting the market, please follow the one-way customer flow by entering on MacCannany St. beside City Hall. Remember to follow physical distancing guidelines while shopping.
#5 Belleville’s Trails
After you’ve had a lovely meal on a patio and shopped the local businesses downtown, why not take a stroll down one of several beautiful trails? There are over 10 kilometres of trails all within a stone’s throw of the Downtown District that will take you to parks, Meyers Pier, Zwick’s Park (where you can find the Pop-Ups on the Bay), or you can walk through historic Old East Hill and visit Glanmore National Historic Site!
This of course is just a few options of what you can expect to find downtown. For more of what’s going on in the District, check out https://downtownbelleville.ca/!
