Quinte Little Theatre: A New Chapter in Community Arts

Quinte Little Theatre Starts a New Chapter in Community Arts

A new theatrical space is taking root in Quinte West that’s bringing a fresh, inclusive, and dynamic approach to community theatre. Quinte Little Theatre (QLT), an all-female run group, has embarked on a mission to reinvigorate the local arts scene with its unique blend of traditional and contemporary performances. The unity and passion they share are inspiring, bringing about a new chapter in the local arts community.

“We were all involved in theatre and small groups and genuinely shared the same goals when it came to what we wanted from a theatre experience,” explains Amber Lucas, one of the executive co-chairs. Amber and fellow co-chair Alyssa Ross initially gathered the soon-to-be team with a simple presentation and an invitation to dinner, during which they laid out their vision. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and thus, QLT was born.

Setting Themselves Apart

In a region already bustling with various theatre groups, QLT aims to carve out its own niche. “We found that there are some theatres doing the classics that older patrons know and love, and there are newer theatres producing edgier, thought-provoking pieces. We want to bring more fun to the theatre and offer something for everyone, including the youth,” Amber states. This vision includes a strong commitment to providing quality theatre while also offering mentorship for the next generation of thespians.

One of the core values at QLT is creating a safe space for creativity. “There is a lot of accountabilities among our group in providing a safe space where people can be comfortable exploring their creative side,” emphasizes Amber. This nurturing environment is key to their mission, hoping to attract more people to participate in their auditions, productions, and programs.

Engaging Youth

A significant initiative that highlights QLT’s commitment to the community is its upcoming youth theatre workshop. “Providing theatre for youth and children in the area is something I am, personally, very passionate about,” says Amber. Scheduled for this fall, the five-week workshop is designed for youth aged 10-17 and will culminate in a performance of parodies based on traditional children’s stories and nursery rhymes. This immersive experience includes elements of music, dance, improvisation, and production management, making it a comprehensive introduction to theatre arts.

The workshop’s accessibility is also a priority, with a nominal fee of $15, which covers the cost of a student membership. “If this program is a huge success, we will offer another workshop in the spring of 2025.”

Upcoming Productions

QLT’s debut season will bring a variety of entertaining and thought-provoking productions to the community. Their first major show, Rock Bottom: Happily Never After, explores the lives of Disney Princesses after their happily ever afters, set in a local karaoke bar. “This show is for the grown-ups only, so make it a date night and leave the kiddos at home,” adds Amber. Written by co-chair Amy-Lyn VanLondersele, this production is slated for September 20 and 21 and is already generating buzz.

Following Rock Bottom, QLT will host a variety show on September 27, featuring a mix of singing, comedy, and audience engagement. Additionally, auditions for their full musical Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier are set for November, with the show planned for June 2025.

Vision for the Future

While QLT may have “little” in its name, its aspirations are anything but. “We are still a little overwhelmed—in the best way possible—from our open house reception, but I think that is a great sign that the area is truly happy we are here,” says Amber. The group envisions a mentorship program, training future producers, directors, and stage managers. They dream of having a dedicated space for sets, props, and costumes and hope to one day see “Quinte Little Theatre in neon lights with a full staff and events happening weekly.”

Moreover, they aspire to host the Eastern Ontario Drama League for festivals and open their doors to other artists, including musicians, dancers, and painters. This expansive vision reflects their ambition to not only serve the residents of Quinte West but also attract tourists to the region.

How to Get Involved

For those interested in supporting or joining QLT, there are several avenues to explore. “Anyone is welcome to become a member,” Amber invites. Sponsorship and donations are also crucial as the group looks to fund their ambitious projects. However, the most impactful way to support QLT is by attending their shows and events. “Show up and share how amazing it is! Leave reviews, share our socials, and spread the word.”
